CHANGE AND CONSTANTNESS

What will be left behind? What will remain? It is to become a new home, one in which the residents can truly feel at home. The artistic design process began with workshops with the team from the Steyr residential home, followed by storytelling and drawing workshops with future residents from other residential homes and shared apartments in Steyr and Schlierbach. Based on the stories and belongings of the future residents, watercolors of plants, hand-colored portraits and paintings, and images incorporating quotes were created in collaboration with the design and craft collective. Change, as one of the central themes, was incorporated into the house through references to the seasons, thus illustrating the transformation within.

The living space is enlivened by an exhibition of plant families. Framed watercolors of various flower species lend the interior botanical hues that emphasize growth and change. The residents’ memories of plant genera and “old” gardens formed the basis for the artwork.

As is often seen in private homes, portraits of the residents are displayed in the living areas, with the unique feature that they are hand-colored photographs.

Inspirational sayings and proverbs are featured on textile murals in the stairwells—memories and wisdom that endure over time.

The common rooms serve as repositories for the residents’ mementos, collected through stories and photographs. A series of embroidered images, like replicas, showcase their treasured possessions, distributed across the three floors of the building.

Thanks to all the colleagues at pro mente Upper Austria and the residents of the Steyr residential home!

In March 2022, pro mente Upper Austria opened its new residential home in Steyr. Twenty-one people, each with their own story, personal belongings and mementos, wishes and expectations, moved into a new home together. This home offers people with psychosocial support needs full-time care, short-term and transitional care, support in developing their own resources, and a place to live until the end of their lives. The light-filled building is located in a new, centrally located part of the Tabor district.
