Weather leaves no one cold. Weather is tangible. In the exhibition “Weather reports from the regions” drawings and photographs, video and audio recordings, give insights into the search for images and words that represent oneself in the context of the weather.

The project is a collaboration of participants of pro mente OÖ from all regions of Upper Austria with the KunstRaum Goethestrasse xtd. It is about the people and their regions, in which they are located. Each region has its specifics. The moods in the respective regions as well as the location-specific characteristics are different. The weather allows one to perceive the all around. Weather is changeable and unstable. In the search for one’s own weather, one needs the particular, the different, the juxtaposition. One simply feels the weather.

What is weather for me? How does it feel? What does it look like?  Where in my area have I experienced it? Where do I find my weather mood?

“My favorite weather I have to say quite honestly is snow when it snows.  It always reminds me of my childhood. I just like the snow It just feels nice when it’s cold. Even when it snows, it’s relaxing and calming when the flakes fall.”  (Participant from Ried)

Pro mente Upper Austria offers people with psychosocial support needs leisure and communication services and day centers in the six regions of Upper Austria – Innviertel, Mühlviertel, Pyhrn – Eisenwurzen, Traunviertel – Salzkammergut, Linz and Wels.  For the first time, with this project and the exhibition, a cooperation between in the respective regions and within all Upper Austrian regions was started.

The exhibition presents results that emerged in a series of artistic-creative workshops that took place from September 2017 to June 2018. The workshops took place in the regions, the workshops were developed and implemented by KunstRaum Goethestrasse xtd , Beate Rathmayr and Susanne Blaimschein. The photographs were taken by Reinhard Winkler.

An assignment to the participants was to recreate a mood of the weather, a contemplation on the weather. For this purpose, photographs of artistic works on the subject of weather were made available. The individuals chose the image that seemed most feasible and emotionally closest to them as appealing. Putting oneself in the picture and finding one’s place in it, depicting it and engaging with it can result in a playful moment paired with excitement and provides space for one’s own interpretations.  For this purpose, artistic works from art history such as Van Gogh, Caspar David Friedrich, as well as contemporary works by Olafur Eliason, Julita Wojcik, … were offered. The paintings were staged in places in the regions, which also meant to find such in the respective regions, to find the image.

“I chose the picture with the sun because it is an element that I like very much. I like brightness. I like joy. As a place for photographing I have chosen the Michaela church. This is one of the oldest churches as far as I know in Steyr. It is not big, you feel really homely there and it is also very bright in this church. (Participant from Steyr)

The picture that served as a model comes from a work by Olafur Eliason, as can be seen on the right next to a drawing from the workshop.

“I am proud of what I have done” says that participant from Schärding, who can be seen in this picture” .

In the exhibition space, the participants of the project become visible through photographs. In addition, drawings on the weather phenomena, videos are presented. Audio recordings also give the participants a voice.

Drawings that have to be put on paper in 15 seconds in quick drawing rounds, in the terms to the weather, are to be seen here from the region Mühlviertel.

The exhibition can be seen until July 31 in the KunstRaum Goethestrasse xtd and will subsequently be visible in the regions.

The KunstRaum Goethestrasse xtd is an offer of pro mente Upper Austria. The annual theme for 2018 is “Cooperation is a long way. We can do something about it!”

Participatory processes and artistic results are central to the work of KunstRaum Goethestrasse xtd. As a production and presentation space for contemporary art, KunstRaum works on societal and social issues and for an expanded concept of art.  Bringing cultural participation and art into everyday life is a central concern.

“Participation is more than taking part in the finished conceived work of art. It is being invited to participate in the production process: Working with KunstRaum Goethestrasse xtd means engaging in a collaborative process in which ideas, conceptions and ways of working do not simply meet in the middle, but rub up against each other, challenge each other, and then come together to form a unique whole. These are collaboratively achieved results in which fellow artists and participants find themselves in different positions.” (Claudia Schnugg on KunstRaum)
