HIC SVNT DRACONES servus.at – artistic research lab 2017
guest at KunstRaum Goethestrasse xtd Showroom
Early world maps and nautical charts often depicted unknown places with fables such as sea serpents and sea monsters. Alongside fictional islands and mythological figures, the phrases HIC SVNT DRACONES characterized the undiscovered territories and motivated explorers to venture there.
Is there anything left to discover in today’s technology-based and mapped information society?
What paradigm currently guides cartographic practices? How has discovery evolved via the internet?
Throughout 2017, servus.at organized an artistic research lab on the topic of digital cartography and mapping. Davide Bevilacqua, Veronika Krenn, Hanna Priemetzhofer, Franziska Thurner, and Us(h)i Reiter searched for glitches and errors in mapping technologies and experimented with Situationist practices to rediscover the city. Results, experiments, and reflections are presented in the form of a process-oriented exhibition.
