What happens when people, united by an interest, use space and time together and agree to
make art?The project series “WE COMMIT TO MAKING ART, WE COMMIT TO CREATE. II” invited artists and creative professionals to realize new works on the
annual theme “It takes reality” of KunstRaum Goethestrasse xtd. The participants’ artistic projects were developed
in workshops and in exchange with invited experts from April to July.

With contributions by: Silvia Bartoš, Henriette Gschwendter, Arthur Haag, Doris Hannon, Eva Kappelmüller, Manuela Oberhamberger, Andrea Prantl, Margit Riezinger, Dagmar Scharrer, Erika Schwyhla, Hermine Scheiber, Gertraud Sobotka, Monika-Maria Windtner

The project series “We commit to making art, we commit to create II” offers an artistic and creative exploration of the theme “Reality is needed”—the phenomenon of reality, the living space in which we live and work.

Formats, workshops, and intensive days, as well as a project launch and presentations of the new works, will take place over a period of five months, from April to July 2024. The thematic exploration will be supported by input from artists, art educators, and experts. “We commit II” builds on the experiences of the project “We commit to making art, we commit to create,” a model project for inclusive art creation on equal footing.

To kick off our collaborative exploration and individual work, we invited Franz Xaver Baier to give a presentation on the first focus topic, “Reality and Space,” followed by a discussion and a workshop. He is an author and professor of architecture in Munich and focuses on “our extended existence and the actual lived space of living beings.”

“It was wonderful being with you all. So human, so vibrant. And the participants truly engaged. I felt very comfortable in the group. I’ve never experienced such a personal connection between people and things—and the stories behind them. I find this very interesting and hope that it will be reflected in the further process.”

In keeping with the theme, Sam Bunn spoke about his current artistic work and the development of a computer game during an artist talk and discussion.

Sam Bunn, a British artist living in Linz, works in the fields of installation, performance, and film, developing experiments and prototypes, often in collaboration with others.

“It was nice to talk about something that’s in progress—although it was also a little scary/emotional, since everything is fluid/unfinished/speculative. It was nice to get a few laughs and to get a feel for some of the participants. I really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and the spontaneity of the questions.”

We were delighted to welcome Karin Schneider, contemporary historian and art educator, as our guest speaker for a conversation and discussion.
Karin Schneider connected us with the present moment, allowing us to collaboratively create stories about our everyday lives. She spanned a remarkable range of topics, from reality and science to historiography, fiction, individual perception and memory, and ultimately, art.

Dagmar Schink, Managing Director of the VALIE EXPORT Center Linz – Research Center for Media and Performance Art, presented selected works by VALIE EXPORT and related them to our LAB events. Since the late 1960s, VALIE EXPORT has used her body, the female body, to critique the male gaze and address the role of women in both art and society. Her approach remains relevant today and facilitates dialogue about equality and gender roles.
