IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO HAVE A STATEMENT
KunstRaum Goethestrasse xtd often bases their projects on statements that are relevant to society. Based
on the statement “Before we fail we might as well work together”, this project is dedicated to realizing resolutions together. The project is intended to give this statement life and bring it into public spaces, as well as
into the consciousness of the partners. The goal was to gain allies to help carry this message. In the workshops the young participants created pop-up letters, which were then brought to seven distinct locations and
documented there. The pictures and videos that were created in the process are still shown in exhibitions and
in public spaces today. Thus the project combines the production itself, the workshops, and public communication with messages of social impact.
The young participants learned to build letters out of cardboard in the workshops and how to use them in a
production process. Experts were part of the workshops in the beginning in order to help the participants
with the technical aspects. Participants experienced the importance of language, how we deal with language,
and how important the written word is, and how to realize a message. The presentation of the letters in a
public space was a challenge for the young participants, as they chose to present the letters in spaces they
had a personal connection to and spaces where they wanted to make their message clear: their work-places,
or places where they spend time. At the same time they were made visible themselves and had to deal with
handling the letters, thereby also becoming part of the photo and video documentation that is shown in the
exhibition.
The message of this project addresses many different people and organizations. After the planned presentation in the specific spaces chosen by the young participants and by KunstRaum Goethestrasse xtd, the
messages were offered to various organizations, and the letters could be borrowed by events and spaces.
The letters are thus made available to all those who want to carry the message further, who want to pass it
on, or simply support it. Before we fail we might as well work together still continues its journey years later.
